There are so many things to think about as we get ready for school to start, whether your a parent, teacher, or other family member to a school aged student. Now is a good time to set expectations for the change in routine, and address any concerns or issues prior to the first day. Find out how your child is feeling about going back to school, and actively listen to what is said. To prepare, take time to think about the tasks that could be done early, like having supplies and backpacks ready, knowing schedules/teacher(s), taking care of their physical exam as required, and discussing the change in the morning routine. Mark the first day of school on the calendar or discuss when school will start, or set a reminder on the phone. If summer schedules have changed bedtime, start getting back to a school schedule by going to sleep and waking up earlier. All these ideas are meant to help adjust and prepare to the upcoming change.
Everyone benefits from being proactive about setting expectations and preparing for changes. Predictable routines lower anxiety since we know what is coming next. Being prepared allows for an easier time in the moment by having things in order and ready to go versus dealing with the chaos of rushing around trying to find things on the fly. I have lived both, and it seems to go better when time is spent to think things through beforehand. : )
Hope that helps, and enjoy the last few weeks of summer break!
